Katie Weng '09 Becomes Third BMC Runner
to Qualify for Track and Field Nationals
Sophomore Katie Weng has become the third person in the Bryn Mawr athletic program's history to qualify for the NCAA National Track and Field Championships. . Weng's time of 37:32.54 in the 10,000-meter race shattered the previous school record held by Jenny Gapin (40:21.53), set in 2003.
The other two Owls who qualified for nationals were All-American Joanna Simonis and NCAA steeplechase qualifier Melissa Leedle, both 2005 graduates.
On the day Weng qualified, Bryn Mawr runners established or set 13 personal records, including Cara Petonic '07 in the 400 hurdles, Caitlin Evans '10 in the shot put, Lucy Wackman '10 and Leah Weightman '10 in the 400 and 200 respectively, while Julia Lustick '09 and Jessica Varney '10 set new marks in the 5,000 meters.
Earlier this year at the Centennial Conference indoor track-and-field championships, first-year runner Akua Nyame Mensah '10 won both the 200 and 400 meter and set new school records in those races.
Weng placed third in the 3,000 meters and set a new indoor record in that race. For the outdoor season, she is currently fifth in the nation in the 10K.
Head Coach Dan Talbot stated, "This was an excellent start to the season, a really good team effort!"
The Owls return to action on April 13 and 14 as they travel to participate in the West Chester University Invitational.
