On Campus: May Day, TLI, Diversity Conversation, Teach-in, Flash Fiction

May Day Schedule Set. May Day 2007 will be celebrated at Bryn Mawr on Sunday, May 6. The festivities begin at 5:45 a.m., when sophomores rise to prepare May baskets for seniors; the last event of the day is the traditional screening of The Philadelphia Story at 10:45 p.m. The Convocation in Goodhart will take place at 8:45 a.m., and the procession to the Maypole will start at 9:30 a.m. For a complete schedule, see www.brynmawr.edu/news/mayday/.

TLI at Coffee Hour. On Friday, April 27, Coffee Hour (from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Thomas Great Hall) will feature an informal discussion about the College's Teaching and Learning Initiative with some of the 32 faculty members, 32 staff members and 35 students who have participated in the project. Organizers promise that those who attend can hear about "how students help faculty members make their classrooms more responsive to diverse learners; how staff members share with students their knowledge of woodworking, cooking, self-defense, crafts, music and more; how professors work with students to gather feedback on their classes; and how students work with staff members on developing computer skills." The coffee and doughnuts, as well as the conversation, are free — but drinkers should bring their own mugs.

Diversity Conversation: Mental Illness. How do you define mental health and illness? Where do people with mental illness at Bryn Mawr fit in? Those questions will be considered at "Thinking and Feeling Differently: Mental Health/Mental Illness at BMC," the Office of Intercultural Affairs' last Friday Diversity Conversation of the academic year. The conversation will take place at the Multicultural Center from noon to 1 p.m.; as always, lunch will be provided.

Social Justice Teach-In. On Saturday, April 28, members of the Bryn Mawr faculty will hold a teach-in on social justice from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Taylor C, D and E. Organized by Associate Professor of English Linda-Susan Beard, the event is designed to present the case for a social-justice requirement in the Bryn Mawr curriculum and to examine "impediments to our students' understanding of 21st-century global realities."

Taught by a Master. On Monday, April 30, at 7 p.m., students in celebrated author Jane Alison's short-fiction class will read from their work in the Dorothy Vernon Room of Haffner. Students who will read include Anna Mendoza '08, Benjamin Lansky, Devin DeSilvis '07, Gilda Rodriguez '07, Hannah Wood '08, Jessica Rosenberg '07, Katherine Faigen '09, Kathleen Myers '07, Maggie Bohara '10, Paul Bisceglio, Piyali Bhattacharya '07, Sarah Caldwell '08, Sarah Kemp '09 and Sam Knapp. The reading is free and open to all, and refreshments will be served.
