Owl of the Week
Caitlin Evans '10 |
Field Hockey goalie Caitlin Evans '10 racked up 22 saves against Smith College at last weekend's Seven Sisters Tournament, earning her second shutout of the year and Owl of the Week honors. The tennis team also enjoyed a shutout, in its season opener against Allbright College, as did the Horned Toads rugby club team, with an impressive 31-point spread against Ursinus. Volleyball suffered its first loss of the season and immediately rebounded with two wins; soccer posted a 1-1-1 record for the week, and the cross-country team's Katie Weng finished third in the Falcon/Mule Invitational. Cross Country
The Cross Country team returned to races this past weekend as the Owls traveled to Allentown for the Falcon/Mule Invitational. Katie Weng '09 paced the Owls with a third-place finish as Bryn Mawr finished fourth out of nine teams. Other top finishers for the Owls were Julia Lustick '09 (13th) and Jessica Varney '10 (22nd). Maggie Lloyd '10, also scoring points for Bryn Mawr, improved her time from last year's race by 2 minutes.
Field Hockey
At the 24th Annual Seven Sisters Championships, Bryn Mawr beat Smith College 1-0 in the opening game before falling to host Mount Holyoke 7-0 Sunday afternoon. In the game against Smith, the Owls and Pioneers battled for 96 scoreless minutes before Caroline Heffernan '10 blasted the ball past the goalie. Goalie Caitlin Evans '10 posted 22 saves in her second shutout of the year.

Sunday, against Mt. Holyoke, the Owls were unable to put the ball in the cage as the Lyons cruised to a 7-0 victory. Evans posted eight saves while Heffernan and Ashley Dawkins '08 both registered shots. Heffernan and Laura Alexander '11 were named 2007 Seven Sisters Field Hockey All-Tournament Team.
Rugby
The Bryn Mawr-Haverford Horned Toads club team started its 2007 campaign with an impressive win on the road against Ursinus, 31-0.
Soccer
Bryn Mawr went 1-1-1 on the week as the team topped Philadelphia Bible College 3-1 before falling to Gettysburg, and battling to a 0-0 tie with Alvernia College Tuesday afternoon. In their first game with Philly Bible, Jilian Forde '11 netted her first and second career goals to seal the deal over the Crimson Eagles. Laura Costanzo '10 got the Owls on the board first in the 11th minute. The Owls kicked off conference play this past weekend as Gettysburg traveled to the Main Line Saturday afternoon. Despite losing to the Bullets 2-0, the Owls got stellar performances from keepers Sarah Simons '08 and Collette Pullion '09, who combined for 16 saves. Emily Wiseman '11 and Costanzo registered two shots each.
In their final game of the week with Alvernia, the Owls battled the Crusaders through two scoreless regulation periods and two 15-minute overtime periods before the game ended in a 0-0 draw. Wallis Romzek '08 and Akua Nyame-Mensah '10 led the offensive charge for Bryn Mawr with three shots apiece while six other Owls registered shots. Pullion posted 11 saves while Krystin Wessner '08 kept the score locked at zero with a defensive save in the 67th minute.
Tennis
The tennis team blanked visiting Albright College Wednesday afternoon in its season opener, 9-0, as the Owls did not allow more than two points in any match. Bryn Mawr took an early 3-0 lead as number-one doubles (Karen Ginsburg '10/Leah Blankenship '08) and number-three doubles (Anna Dejdar '09/April Lee '09) defeated their opponents 8-0. The number-two team of Marie Sager '09 and Melissa Mansh '09 topped Allbright's Marissa Cooperman and Stacy Bampton 8-1.
The only shutout of singles came from the number-six position as Lee won 6-0, 6-0 over Amanda Cain. At number-one singles, Ginsburg defeated Copperman 6-1, 6-0; while number-two Sager and number-five Dejdar won their matches 6-2, 6-1. In the number-three slot, Blankenship defeated Bampton 6-2, 6-0, while Mansh bettered Brittany Hubert 6-2, 6-0.
Volleyball
After suffering a 3-0 loss to Gettysburg in conference play Thursday (9/13), the Owls bounced back with two wins over Rosemont and Rutgers-Camden Saturday evening on the road at the Rosemont Ramblers Tri-Match.
In their conference opener with Gettysburg, Julia Harris '09 tallied eight kills, three digs, and one block assist. Lending their helping hands to Harris was Elizabeth Sinclair '09 (four kills, 10 digs) and Kathryn Solook '10 (eight digs). Emma Wisniewski-Barker '11 chipped in 15 assists and three digs.
On the road at the Rosemont Tri-Match, the Owls took care of their opponents in straight fashion, earning both of their victories 3-0. In the first match against Rutgers-Camden, Bryn Mawr won 30-14, 30-13, 30-14, as everyone on the team contributed to the win. As a team, Bryn Mawr tallied 27 kills and 20 service aces. Leading the Owls in the kill column were Harris and Katie Kronbergs '08, who had eight and seven kills, respectively. Leading the Owls in service aces were Christina Avgerinos '09 with five while Kronbergs and Solook each had four.
In the second game of the twin bill with host Rosemont, Bryn Mawr topped the Ramblers 30-13, 30-23, 30-22, with another great team performance. The Owls tallied 30 team kills and 16 aces. Pacing the Owls this time was Sinclair with 12 kills, while Kronbergs added nine. Libero Ashton Shaffer '11 contributed eight aces. Wisniewski-Barker had 47 assists on the day.
