"Taste of Home" Winners to Be Featured
At Reception During Parents' Weekend
While most college students on a steady diet of dining-hall fare miss home cooking, Bryn Mawr College Dining Services has found a way to incorporate students' family dishes into the meal plan. The BMCDS Taste of Home Recipe Contest provides students and their families with the opportunity to submit their recipes to a tasting panel, with the chance of having their dishes added to the Dining Services menu rotation.
Students and their families can sample the winning dishes in this year's Sixth Annual Taste of Home Contest during Parents' Weekend. The Taste of Home Recipe Reception will take place this Saturday, Nov. 3, at 3:30 p.m. in Haffner's Dorothy Vernon Room.
Says Associate Director of Dining Services Dave Chase, "Taste of Home caters to the heart of BMCDS: expanding and improving our selection based upon student input."
This year, over 30 recipes were submitted. A preliminary round of judging by the BMCDS administration selected dishes with the most nutritional value. These selected dishes were then prepared for an afternoon of taste-testing by BMC staff and students, who scored them upon taste, texture, presentation and overall impression. Student-judge and co-head of the Culinary Club Sarah Westbrook '09 said with a wide-smile at the end of the event, "I'm so full! But I definitely want to do this again next year!"
The following dishes captured the prizes:
- Entrée: Chicken a la Vincent, submitted by Amy Rives
- Vegetarian Entrée: White Lasagna, submitted by Terry Mullaney
- Side Dish: Asian Slaw, submitted by Janice Bernard
- Dessert: Banana Cream Pie with Chocolate Chip Cookie Crust, submitted by Laraine Mocenigo
