BMC Named Among Top Producers of Fulbrights

Six Bryn Mawr College students won Fulbright awards to study abroad for the 2007-08 academic year, making the school one of the top 20 liberal-arts colleges in the country in the number of students winning the prestigious awards. Officials at the Fulbright Program released the 2007-08 grant totals in late October.

"Even before the term 'global economy' became commonplace, Bryn Mawr's students understood the value of traveling and experiencing other cultures. So we have a long history of our students being well represented in programs like the Fulbright," said Assistant Dean and Fellowships Adviser Michelle Mancini. "Bryn Mawr students strive to be engaged citizens of the world and the Fulbright Program provides them an excellent opportunity."

Bryn Mawr was 16th on the list of Fulbright producers, edging out much larger institutions, including Williams, Connecticut College and Colgate University.

This year's Fulbright scholars:

Elizabeth Rhoads '07 is spending her Fulbright year studying the complexities of cultural identity and land ownership in Bali.
Hannah Reiss '07 is conducting an ethnographic study of the health-care choices made by pregnant women on a remote Indonesian island.
Catherine Person, a doctoral candidate in classical and Near Eastern archaeology, is spending a year studying the art, archaeology, history and topography of Greece at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens.
Laura Brymer '07 received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to teach at the University of Hong Kong.
Laura Kramer '07 traveled to Madrid, Spain, to teach English as a Fulbright Teaching Assistant.
Indira Neill '07 won a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Bremen, Germany.

Under the Fulbright Program, almost 1,500 American students in more than 100 different fields of study have been offered grants to study, teach English, and conduct research in more than125 countries throughout the world beginning this fall.

Of the 1,500 Fulbrighters, 19 percent are at the Ph.D. degree level, 17 percent are at the master 's level, and 65 percent are at the bachelor's degree level. Students receiving awards for this academic year applied through 570 colleges or universities. Lists of Fulbright recipients are available at: www.fulbrightonline.org/us.

The Fulbright Program also awards grants to American teachers and faculty to do research, lecture and teach overseas. In addition, some 2,200 new foreign Fulbright students and scholars come to the United States annually to study, carry out research and lecture at U.S. universities, colleges and secondary schools.
