Platanos and Collard Greens to Spice Goodhart Stage

Next Wednesday, March 5, Bryn Mawr's Social Justice Pilot Program will host a performance of the off-Broadway hit play Platanos and Collard Greens in Goodhart Theater. Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 7:30 show; a discussion will follow the performance at 10 p.m. Both the show and the discussion are free to members of the Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and Swarthmore communities.

Platanos, written by David Lamb and directed by Summer Hill Seven, tells the story of two college students. Freeman, an African-American man, and Angelita, a Latino woman, are both forced to confront and overcome cultural and racial prejudices while defending their bond from the biases of their families and friends.

A romantic comedy with a hip-hop sensibility, Platanos addresses misunderstandings that sometimes divide African Americans and Latinos. Its trenchant observation of all-too-commonly held prejudices invites the audience to laugh at the misperceptions of its characters while subtly nudging viewers to examine and question their own conventional attitudes.

In anticipation of the show, Haffner Dining Hall will offer platanos and collard greens on its Wednesday-night menu.
