Professional helpers are highly skilled at caring for others but not necessarily as adept at taking care of themselves. High-pressure work environments, demanding organizational cultures, and financial stressors can reinforce self-neglect, chronic overextension, and professional isolation, contributing to burnout among the very practitioners our communities rely on.
This evidence-informed, experiential workshop uses guided self-permission exercises to aid helping professionals in answering the prompt, "What permission can I give myself today?" The practice assists participants in moving beyond cognitive awareness of self-neglect, and its solutions, to an embodied self-nurturing practice. Participants leave able to role-model, not just educate, sustainable wellness by integrating care for self and care for others into one complementary practice.
Presentation names how systemic oppression (racism, heteronormativity, ableism) compounds professional burnout for helpers holding marginalized identities. Prompts are designed to be adapted across cultural, spiritual, and identity contexts, inviting participants to draw on their own frameworks (e.g., faith traditions, ancestral practices, community values).
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to:
- Identify the sociopolitical and systemic factors that contribute to self-denial among professional helpers.
- Demonstrate the use of self-permission slips as an evidence-informed tool for personal and professional development.
- Participate in peer-based community practice to support sustained behavioral change.
- Apply workshop insights to care delivery with clients, colleagues, and agency systems.
