Introduction to Psychodrama introduces clinicians to an action-based modality that transforms internal conflict into clear, observable scenes. Rather than just talking about trauma, addiction, or mental health struggles, participants will learn how to help clients step onto a stage and actively re-author their stories.
You’ll explore core principles like spontaneity, creativity, and role theory across the three essential phases of a psychodrama session. You will step directly into foundational techniques—you'll learn how to make abstract emotions tangible (concretization), give voice to another's unspoken feelings (doubling), view scenes through another’s eyes (role reversal), and step back to gain clarity (the mirror position).
Through interactive exercises, demonstrations, and group discussions, participants will experience how psychodrama can enhance client engagement, emotional expression, integration, interpersonal connection, and therapeutic growth. The workshop will also emphasize trauma-informed considerations, psychological safety, and strategies for integrating psychodramatic interventions into individual and group therapy settings.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe two foundational concepts of psychodrama and their relevance to trauma, addiction, and mental health treatment.
- Identify the three phases of a psychodrama session and explain the importance of safety in experiential therapy.
- Explain the risks of retraumatization and harm in psychodrama.
