Non-traditional relationships, including many forms of non-monogamy, are becoming statistically more popular. Recent studies have shown that for a percentage of the population of the United States, the ideal relationship structure is something other than complete monogamy. Social workers in many settings, including hospitals, schools, and private practice, are likely to continue to engage with folx in non-traditional relationships as time progresses, and therefore must possess competence in caring for and guiding these individuals.

This program will provide an educational background on important issues to non-monogamous individuals, as well as several thought experiments and a participant inventory about personal relationship beliefs to address possible bias.

 

Program Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Utilize and understand appropriate terminology and language when engaging with clients in non-monogamous relationships.
  2. Identify and differentiate between various types of non-monogamous relationships commonly encountered.
  3. Recognize and adapt to the unique considerations and challenges when working with non-monogamous individuals.

This workshop is appropriate for professionals who work with individuals who may be interested in exploring non-traditional relationships in any setting. There is a significant overlap between non-traditional relationship communities and the queer community, so those employed in this area would also greatly benefit.

This workshop is appropriate for post-master's and advanced bachelor's practitioners.

Instructor

Jessica Williams, LCSW practices in the state of Delaware and is the owner of Oak & Evergreen Therapy and Consultation, LLC. Jessica holds a Trauma Certificate from Bryn Mawr College as well as a Certificate in Thanatology from the Association for Death Education and Counseling. She is also a trained adult mental health screener through the Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health (DSAMH). Jessica enjoys working with the LGBTQ+ and non-traditional relationship communities, as it is important to her to encourage clients to reach their goal of living authentic lives.
