This training is aimed at shedding light on the complexities of divorce among older adults. We will delve into the unique challenges faced by individuals navigating separation or divorce in their later years. The clinical, emotional, familial, logistical, financial aspects in grey divorce will be explored, as well as the impact of legal proceedings.

Through discussions, lecture, case examples and activities this seminar will offer practical strategies for managing these challenging relationships. Attendees will gain valuable perspectives on understanding grey divorce and be better able to clinically support their clients in navigating these challenges. This training will also provide clinicians with insight into helping their clients develop coping skills, learn self-advocacy skills, set boundaries, understand the dynamics of rebuilding life after a late-life divorce, as well as how to foster resilience and empowerment in this specific life transition.

Learning Objectives:

  • Enhance Understanding of Emotional Dynamics: Therapists will deepen their comprehension of the emotional intricacies and psychological impact surrounding 'grey divorce,' gaining insights into the unique emotional challenges faced by older adults going through separation or divorce.
  • Develop Therapeutic Strategies: Attendees will acquire effective therapeutic strategies and intervention approaches tailored to support individuals coping with late-life divorces. These strategies may focus on grief processing, rebuilding self-identity, and fostering emotional resilience during and after the divorce process.
  • Explore Family Dynamics and Transition Support: Therapists will explore the impact of 'grey divorce' on familial relationships and transitions, equipping themselves with tools to assist individuals in navigating family adjustments and facilitating healthy communication among family members during this significant life transition.
  • Foster Resilience and Post-Divorce Adjustment: Participants will learn techniques to promote post-divorce adjustment and resilience-building in older adults. This includes guiding clients toward self-empowerment, assisting in setting new life goals, and supporting the navigation of lifestyle changes for a fulfilling post-divorce life phase. How to help clients and their families prepare and cope with all the facets of the divorce process

Diversity and the need for sensitivity will be addressed through case examples, didactic material and clinical exercises.

This program is appropriate for all level of Bachelors or post Master’s professionals who are working with individuals, couples, and families.

Stephanie Newberg, Med. MSW, LCSW Is a licensed psychotherapist working in private practice, working with individuals, couples, and families. She specializes in working with families who are in high conflict divorce. Stephanie is a trained family and divorce mediator, co-parent counselor and reunification specialist. She has done numerous workshops, has publications on divorce, conflict resolution and grief and loss. In addition, Stephanie has taught at BMGSSWSR for 12 years.
