CBT Treatment for Insomnia and Chronic Pain

Two common concerns of clients are insomnia and chronic pain. Current thinking is that insomnia is often a primary presenting problem, not secondary to depression or anxiety. Insomnia often affects sleep. This course will address ways to help clients to identify thoughts and behaviors that impede the ability to sleep and improve sleep without medications. The effects of pain are both physical and psychological. Thoughts that pain can cause a physiological reaction may increase the initial pain. The practice of CBT with these clients may help lessen this cycle and support clients in finding deescalating cognitions, and relaxation and problem solving techniques for a full life despite pain.

CBT for Effective Coping with Trauma

Ample research supports CBT as effective for adults who have coped with trauma. Trauma symptoms and resulting beliefs from trauma impede an individual’s ability to optimally manage social, emotional, relational and educational/ employments tasks. Ergo, clinical knowledge of how to support clients in the management of trauma is vital. Participants will learn techniques for creating an effective trauma narrative, several relaxation techniques and imagery re-scripting.

CBT Treatment for Personality Disorders

At the completion of each course unit participants will be able to: 1) apply the cognitive therapy case conceptualization and theory to the specific disorder covered in the course unit; 2) implement specific CBT techniques when providing treatment in a myriad of social work settings; 3) create treatment plans utilizing CBT theories and interventions; 4) describe the DSM-5 categorical grouping as per the disorder discussed in the course unit; and 5) integrate CBT with other approaches to treatment.
