With approximately 50% of the population in the US experiencing divorce, many clinicians find that they are struggling to manage client’s presentation surrounding the myriad of issues when they emerge in the clinical process.  This course will provide practical skills such as co-parent counseling, reunification counseling, working with the effects of divorce on children, and parenting support skills, to address the many facets that this transition presents when working with clients of all ages.

Does your client seem to be in the exact same stuck place week after week?

As clinicians we have seen the stuck client and will share ways you can help your clients manage their anger and emotions when dealing with their ex-partner; and talk about the multiple losses that come from the divorce process allowing for their growth in manageable incremental ways. We will look at the complexities of the divorce process and the myriad of issues that relate to it.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how to implement techniques and interventions which will address the many aspects that the client and family needs when going through a separation and or divorce.
  • Learn about the unique dynamics of blended families and new partners, and how to help clients gain success when bringing different families together.
  • Discuss the importance and implications of parenting plans for both parents and children.
  • Review effective co-parenting counseling principles and skills.
  • Understand how parental alienation can occur and how to help clients understand and prevent it.

This program is appropriate for all level of post masters professionals who are working with individuals, couples, and families. It is also helpful for professionals who are working with children and adolescents who are in families who are going through divorce and/or separation. Diversity and the need for sensitivity will be addressed through case examples, didactic material and clinical exercises.
