Job Opportunity: LILAC | Civic Engagement Looking for Writing Coach

LILAC | Civic Engagement is looking for a Paid Writing Coach to work in the Science Leadership Academy@Beeber on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:30 am-12:45pm

This position is connected to a partnership between Bryn Mawr College and the Science Leadership Academy @Beeber (SLA@Beeber), a magnet high school in West Philadelphia. The Literacy (Lit) Lab coaches will be working at SLA@Beeber in their Writing Center, called Lit Lab. Lit Lab coaches help high school students with all stages of the writing process - from brainstorm to final edits. the high school students are encouraged to bring any and all writing tasks they may be working on across curriculums. Coaches will use guiding questions and a variety of resources in the Lit Lab to elicit critical thinking in students, and elevate the level of their writing through a deeper understanding of his/her writing. In addition to coaching students in the Lit Lab, coaches will be partnering with high school Lit Lab coaches in a mentor role and further development of the Lit Lab and its resources. Two students are sought to work as a team in this role, which will be supported jointly by LILAC/Civic Engagement, the BiCollege Education Program, and Science Leadership Academy @ Beeber. Writing Coach will be reimbursed for travel time to and from Science Leadership Academy at Beeber.

Students must have taken at least one course in the Education Program or have had experience as a writing coach in the campus Writing Center. Students must have a strong understanding of writing composition, thesis statements, mechanics, and literary elements is needed as well as a grounding in urban education. We will give preference to students who are available for both Monday and Thursday sessions at SLA Beeber and who are able to commit to the job for a full year. However, students who are only available on Monday or only available on Thursday can still apply for the position.
