Summer Internship: Asian Americans United (AAU)’s Summer Program Facilitator Internship

The AAU Summer Program is seeking 2 college undergraduate interns who are fluent in Mandarin Chinese to serve as facilitators for the Summer Program. Interns will be responsible for planning, facilitating, and overseeing the Summer Program as part of the leadership team. The team will develop a program calendar, daily workshops, and conduct daily check-ins with youth participants.

INTRODUCTION TO ASIAN AMERICANS UNITED:

Asian Americans United (AAU) exists for people of Asian ancestry in Philadelphia to exercise leadership to build our communities and unite to challenge oppression. Our social justice work includes grassroots community organizing, advocacy and youth leadership development, with an emphasis on low income, immigrant, and former refugee communities.

OUR VISION:

The AAU Chinese Youth Organizing Project (CYOP) Summer Program is an intensive 6-week program designed for 26 Chinese immigrant youth that combines leadership development, political education, and a community engagement project. Past projects have focused on building community resistance to the increasing attacks on immigrant communities, increasing civic engagement of the Chinese community, and surveying community members on the gentrification of Chinatown. After three weeks of training, youth lead the community engagement project in teams and put together a final community forum where they share their work.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:

The AAU Summer Program is seeking 2 college undergraduate interns who are fluent in Mandarin Chinese to serves as facilitators for the Summer Program. Interns will be responsible for planning, facilitating, and overseeing the Summer Program as part of the leadership team. The team will develop a program calendar, daily workshops, and conduct daily check-ins with youth participants.

This is a full-time position. Applicants should be energetic team players who have strong leadership potential, a positive attitude, a high level of self-motivation, and enjoy working with teenagers. Applicants must be committed to working for social change, activism, and community building. Good communication skills and supervision skills are required.

IMPORTANT DATES: Program Dates: Monday, June 24 – Thursday, August 2, 2019 & Intern Dates: end of May, 2019 (flexible) – Tuesday, August 6, 2019

COLLEGE INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Plan, develop, and lead social justice curriculum for high-school age immigrant Chinese youth

* Facilitate workshops

* Conduct one-on-one check ins with youth participants

* Take part in daily debriefs with the Leadership Team

* Supervise youth in community engagement project

* Work as part of the Leadership Team to oversee the day-to-day functioning of the program

* Play a mentorship role to high school team members

* Participate in all staff training

* Assist in daily service site operations

* Assist with administrative responsibilities as needed

COMPENSATION: A full time commitment for six weeks is required. Students are encouraged to apply for summer stipends and grants through campus resources if available.
