Barbara Miller Lane’s New Book Receives Athenaeum Literary and PROSE Awards

Professor Emeritus Barbara Miller Lane’s new book Houses for a New World: Builders and Buyers in American Suburbs 1945-1965 (Princeton University Press, October, 2015) has won the Athenaeum Literary Award (for art and architecture) for 2016.  This award was established in 1950 by the Philadelphia Athenaeum to honor scholarly works, not only for their literary excellence, but also on the basis of their significance and importance to the general public.

An award ceremony will be held at the Athenaeum, located at 219 S. 6th Street, Philadelphia, Pa., in early May.

Lane’s book has also won the 2016 PROSE award in architecture and urban planning, from the Association of American Publishers.

Lane is Mellon Professor Emeritus in the Humanities at Bryn Mawr College, and Research Professor in the Growth and Structure of Cities department.
