Spanish majors Eva Ackerman '18, Dana Gold '18, and Amanda Wessel '20 won the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives’ (ALBA) George Watt essay contest, for their research paper on Jewish participation in the Spanish Civil War.

The essay focuses on Jews from the United States, Argentina, and Palestine, and chronicles the diverse historical and social contexts motivating their participation in the war. Eva, Dana, and Amanda wrote their essay as a final research project for Spanish Professor Rosi Song’s course on Spanish Civil War and Memory.

The paper was selected from competitive undergraduate essays from around the world for its outstanding arguments and research. A summary of the essay was published in ALBA’s magazine, The Volunteer, and the full essay is available on their website.
