September 15, 2016

Growth and Structure of Cities Term Professor Jeffrey Cohen has contributed his expertise on the work of architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe and on the early architectural history of Philadelphia to the Philadelphia Museum of Art‘s recently opened exhibition Classical Splendor: Painted Furniture for a Grand Philadelphia House.

The exhibition showcases furniture designed in 1808 by Latrobe, the influential architect best known for his role in designing the United States Capitol.

Cohen worked with the curatorial team to reconstruct the long lost city mansion that housed these striking and novel pieces and contributing an essay, “Place, Time and Architecture: Materialized Memory and the Moment of Latrobe’s Waln House,” for the exhibition catalogue.
