Flexner Lectureship 2026-27: Call for Nominations

September 9, 2025

The below message was sent to faculty, staff, and students on September 9, 2025.

Dear faculty, students, and other members of the academic community:

I write to invite your nominations for the 2026-27 Mary Flexner Lectureship, established in honor of Mary Flexner, a Bryn Mawr graduate of the Class of 1895.

The Flexner Lectureship features a leading humanist or humanistic social scientist whose work demonstrates the public value of the humanities and who successfully speaks to audiences inside and beyond the academy. Prior Flexner Lecturers have included cultural theorist Fred Moten, cultural critic Bonnie Honig, and gender theorist and philosopher Judith Butler. The full list can be found here.

The successful candidate will be able to make three to four visits to campus during the 2026-27 academic year to offer lectures, visit classes, engage in faculty seminars, and otherwise enrich intellectual life on campus. The campus lectures, on new work and work in progress, are intended to form the basis of a scholarly book to be published by Harvard University Press. The Flexner Lectureship includes a generous honorarium.

Any member of the academic community is invited to submit a nomination through the Flexner Lectureship webpage. Please submit nominations by October 10. I will then ask the Committee on Endowed Lectures to review nominations and advise me on the most promising candidates.

I am thrilled by the opportunity to welcome a distinguished visiting scholar through the Flexner Lectureship and look forward to receiving your nominations. Please direct any questions to officeofthepresident@brynmawr.edu

Sincerely,

Wendy Cadge
President and Professor of Sociology
