As we begin the semester, we're highlighting Bryn Mawr's newest faculty members. The College supports faculty excellence in both research and teaching.

Assistant Professor of Economics Jiyoon (June) Kim

My research agenda has consistently addressed the intersection of health disparity and social inequalities. I have developed two strands of research under this overarching theme. First, I have focused on welfare programs in the U.S., primarily the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and its impact on food security, food spending, and time use. Second, I have been interested in the socio-economic determinants of health and economics of health behaviors. I have exploited uncontrollable factors such as weather shocks, genetic predisposition, and abrupt changes in public policies to estimate the causal effect on health and wellbeing of vulnerable populations, including single mothers, infants, children, and low-income households.

Economics is a social science that studies the allocation of scarce resources as a means to better understand many kinds of human interaction. At Bryn Mawr, the economics curriculum helps students master the methods used by economists to analyze economic issues and enables them to make reasoned assessments of alternative public policies in a wide range of fields.
