Professor Airea D. Matthews and Son Wes Matthews Featured on PBS Newshour

December 7, 2022

Associate Professor of Creative Writing Airea D. Matthews is co-director of Bryn Mawr's Creative Writing Program. She's currently teaching Creative Nonfiction and will be teaching Writing Poetry II this spring.

Matthews is also Philadelphia's Poet Laureate for 2022-2023. However, as the below PBS NewsHour piece points out, Matthews is not the first poet laureate in her household. That distinction goes to her son Wes, who served as the 2018-2019 Philadelphia Youth Poet Laureate. Watch the video to "meet with a poetic family and hear how a mother-son duo is working to bring poetry to a wider public."

The Creative Writing Program is designed for students who wish to develop their skills in and appreciation of creative writing in a variety of genres. Creative Writing is designed to prepare students who might wish to pursue advanced training in their fields and is also for those who want to broaden their academic studies with work in the arts that is conducted at a serious and disciplined level. Introductory and advanced courses in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, playwriting, and screenwriting are available.
