Description: Advising administrators must ensure their team establishes learning outcomes rooted in its advising philosophy, shifting the view of advising from solely the technical aspects of academic advising to the much larger lens of student success. To move academic advising beyond its technical elements—supporting course selection and managing degree requirements—advising leaders must identify campus partners and build strategic and sustainable partnerships that will amplify the value of academic advising on a college or university campus. Creating a network of strategic partners essentially means developing a community of practice. As advising administrators consider potential partnerships, they should strongly evaluate the roles that career services; first-year experience stakeholders; faculty members; residence life; athletic coaches and departments; student activities; diversity, equity, and inclusion personnel; academic support; and counseling services (to name a few) play in advancing advising goals. Admittedly, these potential partners are US-centric; thus, readers are encouraged to consider the transferability of the strategies in light of their institutional structures.
