With good food, dancing, and a piñata under the setting sun, the student group Mujeres* kicked-off Latinx Heritage Month programming with a picnic at Perry Garden on Friday, Sept. 15.

Associate Professor of Sociology and Co-Director of Latin American, Iberian, and Latina/o Studies Veronica Montes was the guest speaker for the event, and shared words of encouragement with the group.

"Every one of us who shares this heritage and culture, we know what is is to be in community—in familia. This is a space that was not created for people like us, but we are here because we earned it, because we make a difference, because we make this space better."
