What's happening at your internship? We would love to hear what kind of work you are doing!

Over the past few years, Dr. Mozdzer has been looking at Phragmities Australis, an invasive marsh species. We traveled to a field site in Maryland to gather some data and have been working in the garden behind Arncliffe to work on our independent projects. For the first few weeks, we were becoming familiar with the marsh and made observations to then create an independent project to focus on over the summer.

Why did you apply for this internship?

I worked in the Mozdzer lab during my second semester and enjoyed the lab experience and community. Continuing this work allows me to gain exposure to ecology, which will help me understand the ecology course I plan on taking this upcoming semester.

What has been your favorite part of this internship?

My favorite part of this internship has been going to Maryland, we worked together with previous lab members and got to meet other ecologists. It's important to network and surround yourself with people that understand your research and can provide meaningful insight.

Can you talk about the skills you are learning and why they are important to you?

The skills I'm learning are troubleshooting and continuously trying to practice in order to familiarize myself with something new. Aside from this, speaking up in order to feel confident that I'm getting the full experience, for example, if I feel like I need more practice using a certain instrument, but have been busy working with something else, I will ask for a demonstration and to be temporarily supervised using that instrument to make sure I feel confident navigating it.
