October 24, 2023

Name: Camryn Karis-Sconyers
Class Year: 2024
Major: Comparative Literature
Hometown: Seattle, WA

Internship Organization: Friends of Seattle Public Library
Job Title: Intern
Location: Seattle, WA

What's happening at your internship? We would love to hear what kind of work you are doing!

I’ve been working on a variety of projects to support the organization’s programs. From keeping the website updated, helping the organization make a new system for memberships, to staffing events, I’ve been learning a lot about what goes into running a nonprofit.

Why did you apply for this internship?

I knew I wanted to work in or around libraries. I have always been interested in library work, particularly in public libraries because they provide not only books and information but are also free and open spaces for the community.  I am interested in a career in library science, and/or in nonprofit and NGO work, and interning at Friends of Seattle Public Library gives me experience with both.

What has been your favorite part of this internship?

So many things! Definitely the people, its a small organization, so I get to work closely with my supervisors. One highlight of the summer was staffing our booth at pride where we gave away free books and promoted Friends of SPL programs. I also just love the location inside Seattle Central Library.

What is something you have learned from your internship that you didn't expect?

How to use a calling card!
