What's happening at your internship? We would love to hear what kind of work you are doing!
We focus on the secondary market. The internship provides the opportunity to rotate in two groups. My first rotation was with equity research. I did valuations of stocks and wrote some notes and investment theses. My second rotation is with linear rates trading. It's been only four days since I joined the group, so for now, most of my days are spent reading the primers and shadowing traders to learn more about the products like treasury futures and rate swaps. Starting next week, there will be projects for me to do.
Why did you apply for this internship?
I'm passionate about the markets. I've been following it for several years and have my own investment. I lead the investment group at Bryn Mawr, and I hope to see myself break the gender inequality of the industry, learn the products systematically, and build a career based on it.
Was there anything special about how you found this internship?
I learned how to send cold emails and do networking calls. The process taught me to be resilient while facing rejection and how to grasp the opportunities I had.
What has been your favorite part of this internship?
My favorite part is that I can rotate and get exposure to different groups and affiliated products. The experience can be intense since we have to reach a certain level within a short amount of time, but the opportunity to broaden my knowledge base is great.
What is something you have learned from your internship that you didn't expect?
I learned how to network professionally. Previously, I thought certain roles, like researchers and traders, didn't need to develop communication skills, but I found that this is a client-facing business, and we all needed to know how to build a professional relationship.
Can you talk about the skills you are learning and why they are important to you?
I learned how to dive deep into an industry, do modeling and valuations for a company, and form a view of it. I also learned about how different derivatives work are traded. Though these skills seem different, they taught me how to produce my own perspective responding to the markets' movements or the changes in companies' fundamentals. Generally, I think this is building skills of thinking and making decisions quickly.
What has been the biggest challenge you have faced at your internship?
The biggest challenge is to balance the time spent on the project work and shadowing and communicating with traders. I first focused too much on the project work and didn't realize the importance of leaving people around me an impression. However, communications are important since, as I mentioned previously, this is a people business. Now, I'm trying to find a balance in between.

What is most rewarding about your internship?
I got to learn, not only many technical skills, but also made more friends, including full-time employees and my fellow interns. It's been great to know about other people's life stories and career paths and get inspired.
