Tsuda Umeko (class of 1890, known as Ume Tsuda at the time), who founded Tsuda University, is being honored on Japan's new 5,000-yen banknote. Founded as a college, Tsuda University was one of the first private institutions of higher education for women in Japan. The new bills will be in circulation in 2024.

Masako Iino, President Emerita of Tsuda Unveristy, visited campus last year and spoke about Umeko's legacy. An excerpt from her talk appears in the latest Alumnae Bulletin.
