Students Get Glimpses into Future Careers with Winter Externships

February 4, 2026

Each Winter and Spring break, Bryn Mawr sponsors externships that enable students to explore different career options with our extensive alumni network by shadowing professionals in their workplace or engaging in virtual career conversations.

Raising the Bar

Jacqueline Deane has been welcoming student externs for most of the ten years that she's been on the bench at Brooklyn Family Court. For her, exposing college students to Family Court has been particularly meaningful because it’s not an area many people are familiar with, yet it offers many wonderful, fulfilling career opportunities. This year, she welcomed Carina Roberts '28, who Deane said was "thoughtful and insightful throughout the experience." The two bonded not only over their shared interest in the field, but also over their favorite dorm (Rhoads) and how various Traditions have evolved throughout the years.

Over winter break, Juanita Beenyi '26 explored the world of healthcare at an externship with Dr. Alexandra Kohn, a clinical psychologist at Cognitive Behavioral Psychology of NY.

Throughout her time at Bryn Mawr, Juanita has taken advantage of a number of opportunities offered by the Career & Civic Engagement Center. This past summer, she worked as a pharmacy technician in Winneba, Ghana. After two research-focused summer internships in past years, she decided she was ready for a more hands-on, clinical experience—something that would allow her to connect directly with patients and explore the human side of healthcare.

Through a variety of funded opportunities during and between semesters, the Career & Civic Engagement Center helps students enhance the opportunities available for their personal and professional development. Thanks to the generosity of our alumni and donors, hundreds of students across all academic departments are funded each year to pursue work opportunities and research experiences in the U.S. and abroad.
