Ruth Fine’s Artistic Ecosystem

Creative ideas often take root in nourishing environments, drawing sustenance from their surroundings and supporting new growth. The Philadelphia-based artist Ruth Fine (born 1941) has both planted and cultivated the seeds of many creative endeavors across her decades-long career as an artist, art historian, curator, writer, and steward.  

 

Featuring works by artists who have inspired Fine, as well as by teachers, friends, and collaborators, this exhibition situates Fine and her work in an artistic ecosystem. Like the interdependent ecologies that sustain our planet, artistic networks are fluid, boundary-defying, and shaped by multidirectional influences. Fine's approach to artmaking embraces this imbrication. Taking the natural world as her primary subject matter, Fine selects, amalgamates, and reimagines natural forms before incorporating them into drawings, prints, paintings, and artist’s books. Her imaginative landscapes are shaped by experience, art history, and a vast network of creative thinkers. Though not comprehensive, this display offers a glimpse into Fine's artistic world through objects from Bryn Mawr College’s Special Collections.
