Message from Dean of the Undergraduate College Jennifer Walters

May 2, 2018

Dear Students, Faculty, Staff and Alumnae/i:

As promised, I am sharing the recommendations of the History Working Group, which will be made public today. The recommendations are accompanied by a summary of the Working Group’s presentation to the Board. The recommendations address how the Working Group’s learning may inform and shape the College’s future, including how the College recognizes M. Carey Thomas in campus spaces.

These recommendations are the culmination of the first stage of a process of deliberation that enacts our community’s commitment to careful weighing of evidence and views and to shared governance. The Board of Trustees will now take up the next stage of deliberation on this issue, informed by these recommendations as well as other perspectives.

When the Board has completed its deliberations, its final decision will be shared with the full community — including students, faculty, staff, and alumnae/i.

As convener of the History Working Group, I want to convey our appreciation to President Cassidy for creating the Working Group, its charge, and its approach. I also thank the many community members and alumnae/i who shared their perspectives over the course of the year and the members of the Working Group for their work. Finally, I thank the Board for considering the recommendations.

Those who wish to share reactions and reflections with the Board may continue to write to BMCHistory@brynmawr.edu; all correspondence will be collected and shared with the Board. With warm regards,

Jennifer Walters
Dean of the Undergraduate College
