Nicola McHugh '22 to Study in Taiwan as a Boren Scholar
Nicola McHugh '22, who double majored in East Asian Languages and Cultures and Psychology, with a minor in Chinese language, is furthering her education as a Boren Scholar at the National Taiwan University.
The Boren Scholarship Program is designed to increase U.S. knowledge of languages and countries deemed to have security interest for the U.S. Recipients must agree to a “service requirement” to work either in a federal agency with national security responsibilities or in an academic field related to the area of study for which the scholarship was given.
After nine months in Taiwan, McHugh will return to the U.S. to pursue a career in federal service with a focus on national security.
"My career objective is to work in a field that gives me the opportunity to not only utilize my expertise in East Asia, but also take advantage of my ability to speak Mandarin," says McHugh. "Studying Mandarin in Taiwan will allow me to continue to advance my language skills and also to learn more about its culture."
