Program Co-Founded by Professor Emerita Rhonda Hughes Earns STEM Mentoring Award

July 2, 2018

The EDGE (Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education) Program, co-founded by Professor Emerita of Mathematics Rhonda Hughes, recently received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Science Foundation.

The first phase of EDGE was launched in 1998 by Hughes and Spelman College Professor Emerita Sylvia Bozeman to strengthen the ability of female students to successfully complete graduate programs in the mathematical sciences. As the number of EDGE participants grew so did its mentoring efforts. Now EDGE is much more than a summer bridge program. EDGE programs provide ongoing support for women pursuing careers in the mathematical sciences at several critical stages of their careers.
