Info Session: Outreach English

September 7, 2018

Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018, 10AM, English House 212

Share your English skills by becoming an English tutor/conversation partner to a recent immigrant to the U.S.! Through a small time commitment, you can help newcomers improve their ability to participate in the community.

Outreach English, in partnership with the Radnor Township School District, provides conversation partners/English tutors to parents of Radnor students. Most of the families are recent arrivals to the US. Some are immigrants; others are staying for several years while completing schooling or temporary job assignments. Our goals are to be a welcoming presence for newcomers and to help parents to participate in their children’s education and socialization.

Tutors and parents commit to meeting once a week for a 45 minute, one-to-one session. The parents usually want to learn about US culture and practice speaking with a patient, friendly partner. They are interested in being able to speak well enough to participate in the community and communicate with their children’s schools. In some cases they want to improve their English skills in order to gain employment. Most parents prefer to meet during the day when their children are in school. Tutoring usually takes place at the Ludington Library on Lancaster Avenue, an easy walk from campus.

No previous experience in teaching ESL or grammar is necessary. Tutor orientation and support are provided.
