Internship: Internship in Puentes de Salud’s K-6 After-School Tutoring and Mentoring Program

Puentes de Salud, a nonprofit in South Philadelphia, is seeking highly​ ​motivated​ ​individuals​ ​from​ ​all​ ​backgrounds​ ​to​ ​serve​ ​as​ ​tutors​ ​and​ ​mentors​ ​in​ ​their after-school​ ​program​ ​for​ ​children​ ​K-6. Transportation is provided and Spanish proficiency is not required!

Description

We​ ​seek​ ​highly​ ​motivated​ ​individuals​ ​from​ ​all​ ​backgrounds​ ​to​ ​serve​ ​as​ ​tutors​ ​and​ ​mentors​ ​in​ ​our after-school​ ​program​ ​for​ ​children​ ​K-6.​ ​​Puentes​ ​de​ ​Salud's​​ ​education​ ​branch,​ ​Puentes​ ​Hacia​ ​el​ ​Futuro,​ ​is predicated​ ​upon​ ​the​ ​well-evidenced​ ​fact​ ​that​ ​education​ ​is​ ​inextricably​ ​tied​ ​to​ ​the​ ​health​ ​of​ ​individuals​ ​and communities.​ ​The​ ​mission​ ​of​ ​Puentes​ ​Hacia​ ​el​ ​Futuro​ ​is​ ​to​ ​support​ ​the​ ​educational​ ​achievement​ ​of children​ ​in​ ​the​ ​South​ ​Philadelphia​ ​Latino​ ​immigrant​ ​community​ ​in​ ​order​ ​to​ ​improve​ ​long-term​ ​health outcomes,​ ​as​ ​well​ ​as​ ​to​ ​provide​ ​support​ ​in​ ​the​ ​context​ ​of​ ​extremely​ ​limited​ ​educational​ ​resources.​ ​Interns will​ ​have​ ​the​ ​unparalleled​ ​opportunity​ ​to​ ​work​ ​and​ ​to​ ​learn​ ​at​ ​the​ ​intersection​ ​of​ ​social​ ​justice,​ ​migration, community​ ​and​ ​urban​ ​education​ ​in​ ​a​ ​community-based​ ​environment.​ ​Interns​ ​will​ ​be​ ​able​ ​to​ ​build​ ​close relationships​ ​with​ ​a​ ​small​ ​group​ ​of​ ​students​ ​and​ ​work​ ​closely​ ​as​ ​part​ ​of​ ​our​ ​team.​ ​Students​ ​may​ ​use​ ​this work​ ​to​ ​fulfill​ ​academic​ ​field​ ​work,​ ​internship,​ ​or​ ​independent​ ​study​ ​requirements. 

Eligibility​ ​&​ ​Requirements

This​ ​internship​ ​is​ ​available​ ​to​ ​a​ ​highly​ ​accomplished​ ​and​ ​responsible​ ​college​ ​or​ ​graduate​ ​student. Proficiency​ ​in​ ​Spanish​ ​not​ ​required.​ ​Preference​ ​given​ ​to​ ​those​ ​who​ ​can​ ​participate​ ​year​ ​long. Sessions:​ ​​Fall,​ ​Now​ ​-​ ​December​ ​14th,​ ​2017;​ ​Spring,​ ​January​ ​29th​ ​-​ ​May​ ​3rd,​ ​2018

Transportation

LILAC | Civic Engagement provides transportation to and from Puentes de Salud on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Vans leave Pembroke Arch at 2PM and return at 6PM.

In​ ​order​ ​to​ ​work​ ​with​ ​Puentes,​ ​please​ ​follow​ ​these​ ​steps​ ​ASAP​:

1. Please​ ​review​ ​the​ ​​Fall​ ​2017​ ​Intern​ ​Agreement​​ ​carefully​ ​to​ ​understand​ ​your​ ​responsibilities​ ​as​ ​an intern.​ ​You​ ​will​ ​sign​ ​this​ ​with​ ​them​ ​in​ ​person.

2. Sign​ ​up​ ​for​ ​an​ ​orientation​ ​session.

3. Register​ ​with​ ​their​ ​intern​ ​listserv.

4. Sign​ ​up​ ​by​ ​for​ ​a​ ​brief​ ​initial​ ​check-in​ ​meeting​ ​with​ ​their​ ​staff.

5. Sign​ ​up​ ​for​ ​the​ ​day(s)​ ​when​ ​you​ ​will​ ​tutor:​ ​​PHF​ ​Internship​ ​Hour​ ​Tracking​ ​Calendar ​(note​ ​tabs​ ​for​ ​different​ ​days​ ​of​ ​the​ ​week)

6. Complete​ ​a​ ​PA​ ​criminal​ ​background​ ​check​ ​and​ ​child​ ​abuse​ ​clearance​ ​-​ ​both​ ​are​ ​free​ ​and​ ​online: PHF​ ​Clearances​ ​Instructions
