New Century Trust’s Organizational Background

New Century Trust (NCT) is the oldest continually running women’s organization in the country. Born from Philadelphia’s Centennial Exhibition in 1876, NCT has a long and powerful history of educating, empowering, and organizing women. Based out of a nationally registered historic site at 1307 Locust Street in Philadelphia, NCT provides grants to direct service organizations that focus on girls’ leadership and holds events relating to women’s history.

Current Research Needs

Based on its foundational work as an activist organization, NCT seeks highly motivated Research Assistant with an interest in public policy, women’s studies, and women’s history. Research Assistants will be working on specific data driven projects that assess the current state of women in Philadelphia, including an examination of issues over time, such as economic empowerment, political participation, and poverty.

Candidates must demonstrate a strong academic record. Specific duties are project dependent, but may include: community surveying; desk research; data collection; fact checking; designing charts, graphs and tables; writing reports. Research will be used to inform a new strategic direction for the organization.

• Strong organizational skills
• Self-directed and proactive worker
• Good interpersonal skills
• Strong writing skills
• Interest in policy research and women’s issues
• Experience with statistics, economics, or social sciences through coursework
• Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel required
• Strong qualitative research skills

• The economic status of women and girls, women of color, and immigrant women in Philadelphia
• The quality of women’s jobs, including wages, discrimination, paid sick leave, and workplace flexibility
• Women owned businesses in Philadelphia
• The work and welfare experiences of low-income women in Philadelphia
• Increasing access to higher education and non-traditional jobs for low-income women
• Expanding access to income supports for women such as Unemployment Insurance and Family Leave

Time Commitment

10-15 hours per week (unpaid), but flexible and based on project.
