Talk: Domestic Rage – Gender and Migration in 'Rabia

October 12, 2018

Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018, 4:30-6PM, Old Library, Room 224

The talk is presented by Michelle Murray of Vanderbilt University. The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Spanish "New Voices in Iberian and Latin American Studies Series" and it will focus on the 2010 film Rabia and its depiction of gender in relation to Latin American immigration in Spain.

The film's gender dynamics reveal broader tensions around the ways immigrants are imagined to fulfill roles based on their gender identities. The talk thus also explores important questions of assimilation and belonging at a pivotal moment when the world suffers from a daunting refugee crisis and migrants confront nationalist reactions that encourage border security, religious intolerance, workplace exploitation, and xenophobia.
