ASA Culture Show Examines What's "Lost & Found"

On Tuesday, March 1, the Asian Student Association hosted its annual culture show. This theme of the year’s show was “Lost & Found.”

The show artistically explores Asian/Asian American issues of race, culture, and reinvented identity through a variety of performances. The night included poetry performances by poetry group Yellow Rage, and Bryn Mawr student Ann Tran ‘18. Additionally there were performances by Joy Chen, beat boxer Sung Lee, and dances by the Bryn Mawr dance group Choom Boom and the Vietnamese Students Association.

There was also a fashion show that featured traditional and contemporary dress.

Throughout the show two videos were played that featured members of ASA responding to the idea of their lost and found identities.

During the show members of the ASA answered the questions, how has your identity been lost and how has it been found?

“I think the labels I choose to identify myself are constantly changing so it’s hard to pinpoint what parts of my identity are lost and found because I think the label of Asian constantly changes through generations so how each person relates to the label of Asian wouldn’t be the same,” said Malini Sharma ’18.

“Even though I group up in an area with a pretty sizable Asian-American population it wasn’t until I got to college that I started to actually learn about say Chinese history in my East Asian Studies classes and Asian American history in ASA events,” added Amy Xu ’17. “And for me that is so important because it was first time I got to understand why I feel the way I feel and why I experience some things the way I do. ..It is just so important to be able to make sense of your experiences.”
