Building a Record-Breaking Triangle

April 27, 2016

With help from the Bryn Mawr community, Professor of Mathematics Victor Donnay and visitors to the Wagner Institute of Science were able to build a record-breaking Sierpinski triangle  last Sunday.

The triangle was built with nearly 30,000 K’Nex pieces and was 90 feet wide and 45 feet across. Read about the Wagner build and see pictures on Newsworks.org.

Prior to the Wagner build, Donnay had the Bryn Mawr community help build many of the 6,500 smaller triangles that made up the final record breaker. They also built a larger section as a bit of a test run.

Below is a time lapse video from the Bryn Mawr build. For more photos, visit this online gallery.

Donnay has FREE K'Nex Classroom Kits that are available to teachers until April 30. He is also continuing to try to raise funds to help pay for the purchase of the K'Nex. Donations can be made here.  The remaining costs are being covered by generous donations from the Philadelphia Regional Noyce Partnership , the Wagner Free Institute, the Philadelphia Science Festival, Bryn Mawr College, and the K’NEX company.
