Professor of Mathematics Victor Donnay and the students in his Tri-Co Philly course Math Modeling and Sustainability are learning to use math to analyze and make informed fact-based decisions on issues of sustainability.

They’re also taking full advantage of their location in the heart of Philadelphia to engage with others interested in the broader issues related to creating a more just and sustainable world.

On Sept. 20, Donnay and his students took part in the Philadelphia Climate Strike and the week prior they went to the Green New Deal conference at the University of Pennsylvania.

“With all that we learn in our classes, I really enjoyed the opportunity to get off of campus and interact with some of those same issues,” says Sarah Golobish ’20.

The Tri-Co Philly Program is a new curricular and co-curricular program open to sophomore, junior, and senior students of the Tri-Co. Students take classes taught by Tri-Co professors in Philadelphia in multiple areas of study while focusing on the urban setting. The Program is centered on urban education and environmental justice this semester. There will be a lecture by environmental justice activist Elizabeth Yeampierre, Executive Director of Brooklyn's oldest Latinx community-based organization, UPROSE on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 6:30 p.m. at the Friends Center, 1501 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, PA. The lecture is free an open to the public.
