A group of Bryn Mawr students, faculty, and staff helped renovate a house in Pottstown, PA for the nonprofit Habitat for Humanity.
The volunteer effort was a part of the second annual Women Build Week, a week created by the nonprofit in which women specifically are encouraged to put their building skills to the test.
Bryn Mawr College student volunteers included team leader Renee Eddy Harvey ’17, Yezi Yang ’19, and Sierra Norman ’19. Staff included Marianne Weldon, Carrise Mangano, and Angela Dowdy. Senior Lecturer Jeff Cohen of the Growth and Structure of Cities Department also volunteered.
Working a full eight-hour day, the volunteers gave the house on the city’s Walnut Street a full makeover: a rebuilt front porch, frame on the inside of the house, and a fence in the yard.
“I was shocked with how much we changed the house in one day,” said Sierra.
The house will be home to the Thompson family, a multi-generational family of eight, scheduled to move in in mid-December.
“Habitat for Humanity makes an unbelievably positive impact on families’ lives, and I love that Bryn Mawr College teamed up with them,” Sierra added.
This opportunity was made possible through the generous sponsorship of the LILAC Civic Engagement Office, the BMC Staff Association, the Provost’s Office, and the President’s Office. Together, the sponsors were able to pay the $200 registration fee for all the Bryn Mawr volunteers.
