Julien Suaudeau’s podcast, Song of Philadelphia, has been nominated for a Signal Listener’s Choice Award. The Signal Awards recognize “the most potent, meaningful and unprecedented audio projects being made today.” Voting for the Listener’s Choice award is open until Thursday, Oct. 15.

For the third season of his podcast, Suaudeau, a senior lecturer in the French and Francophone Studies department and head of the Film Studies program, focused on one of Philadelphia’s non-native sons whose artistic vision was heavily influenced by his time in the City of Brotherly Love.

Filmmaker David Lynch has said that living in Philadelphia from 1965 to 1970 was one of his biggest artistic influences, particularly for his cult-classic first full-length film, Eraserhead.

“In the atmosphere there was fear, there was violence, there was despair and sadness. There was a feeling of insanity and kind of a knowledge of corruption and this sort of seeped into me,” Lynch said during an interview at Bryn Mawr Film Institute in 2014.

Launched on the first anniversary of Lynch’s passing and dubbed the Song of Lynchadelphia, the season examines how Lynch found the boldness to live “the art life,” as he put it, and to confront “the fear that lived inside him," as his first wife Peggy Reavey told Suaudeau in episode 5.
