Three Bryn Mawr students presented research at the 2017 Annual Meeting of the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology over winter break, representing the college amongst a diverse group of students, researchers, and academics. The meeting, which aims to be “an educational and research forum for investigations of biology on a broad comparative scale,” was held from January 4-8 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Lily Zogbaum ‘19 was awarded dean’s office funding to attend the meeting. She presented her research on cichlid pharyngeal jaw divergence, which she studied during a summer at UMass Amherst. According to Lily, she found a potential genetic basis for differing pharyngeal jaw morphologies among microhabitats.
The other two students, Erin Bonner '17 and Emily Spiegel ‘18, presented jointly on the evolution of the pea aphid life cycle in response to latitudinal changes in climate. The two collaborated on a similar poster presentation which won first place at the 19th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Chemical and Biological Sciences at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County in October of last year
