On Friday, Oct. 24, Assistive Technology Specialist Grace Cipressi held an opening event for Bryn Mawr’s Disability, Unity, and Innovation Center (DUIC).

The DUIC serves a three-fold purpose:

  • Assistive Technology Library: the DUIC is the site of the Bryn Mawr College Assistive Technology Library. Community members can schedule appointments to meet with an assistive technology specialist for a one-on-one consultation to learn about tools that can help with school and work.
  • Learning Lab: the DUIC serves as a space for community members to learn skills related to assistive technology, accessibility, and design. Community members can schedule one-on-one appointments or attend workshops in the space to learn these skills.
  • Community Lounge: the DUIC serves as a safe, accessible space for students to gather and connect
staff and students at the DUIC

As part of the planning for the DUIC, Cipressi held a series of listening sessions with students last spring, during which they explored inclusive and accessible design practices and gathered their feedback on how they would like the space to be designed.

The center’s features include easy-to-move, lightweight furniture that can be arranged in various ways according to the needs of those using the space, the ability to adjust the lighting and other environmental stimuli in the space, and more.

“This is a place for people to gather and build connections, learn about assistive technology and accessibility solutions, and build the skills to be innovators for tomorrow.” says Cipressi.
