Assistant Professor of Growth and Structure of Cities Min Kyung Lee
My research is in the area of modern architecture and the built environment, specializing in Europe and the Americas from the 18th to 20th centuries. An important theme in my work concerns the history of architectural and urban representations and their role in the production of spatial knowledge. For instance, how do methods to quantify the terrain define the practice of urban planning? How do particular modes and materials of graphic visualization, from surveys to statistics, condition how architects create and design space? Through a current book project, The Tyranny of the Straight Line: Mapping Modern Paris, I explore these issues in relation to the development and use of cartography and mapping practices by French architects and engineers during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The interdisciplinary Growth and Structure of Cities major challenges the student to understand the dynamic relationship of urban spatial organization and the built environment to politics, economics, cultures and societies.
