Travel with us on an exclusive 14-day small group journey. Unearth the grandeur of the ancient world on this singular journey combining premier archaeological sites with the beauty and lore of the Aegean and her isles. As the ancient world comes alive in Athens and the Peloponnese, Crete and Santorini, we celebrate the glory that was Greece – and still is today. We begin our tour in Athens, visiting the city’s treasured sites and tour the city’s most important sites, including the 5th-century Acropolis and Parthenon. After touring the National Archaeological Museum, our group explores Ancient Corinth. We take a private boat excursion to tranquil Hydra and visit the archaeological sites
of Mycenae and Epidaurus. Next is a three-night sojourn in the Cretan capital, Heraklion. Here we tour the Minoan Palace and the renowned Archaeological Museum, board a private boat for a cruise to Spinalonga and visit a Cretan olive oil farm. During a two-night stay on the island of Santorini, we tour a winery and the archaeological site of Akrotiri.

This tour is rated moderate/challenging in terms of physical activity level. Walk 4-6 miles per day, often uphill, on uneven terrain especially at archaeological sites, and on marble surfaces that can be slippery; archaeological sites in Greece require walking on steep grades; occasional long walks from motorcoach drop-off to sights and hotels; many stairs of varying height throughout the tour.

Itinerary

Please note the itinerary is subject to change.

Depart your gateway city for Greece.

After your arrival to the Greek capital, relax at the hotel and enjoy a slow day as guests arrive to the tour.

Visit the city's most important sites, including the 5th-century BCE Arcopolis and Parthenon, and the renowned Acropolis Museum. Enjoy an afternoon of leisure before a welcome dinner that evening.

Explore the ruins of the ancient Greek Temple of Poseidon, dating back to the 5th century BCE in Cape Sounion. The temple poses a stunning site, standing high on a rocky headland surrounded on three sides by the cobalt waters of the Aegean. Enjoy lunch along the Athenian Riviera before enjoying independent exploration in Athens.

Visit the National Archaeological Museum, home to the world's most significant collections of Greek artifacts. We then depart by coach to the Peloponnesian Peninsula, Greece's southernmost region separated by the mainland by the Corinth Canal. Visit the ruins and museums of Ancient Corinth, one of the country's largest cities in antiquity that was demolished by the Romans in 146 BCE.

Tour the imposing ruins of Mycenae, a UNESCO site that represented the pinnacle of civilization from the 15th to 12th centuries BCE. Mycenae also is linked to Homer's epics, Iliad and the Odyssey. We see the tomb of Agamemnon and the Lion's Gate, the only known Bronze Age monumental sculpture in Greece. We move on to the museum of Epidaurus, with its 2,300-year-old theater, still in use today. Then we return to Nafplion where the afternoon is free for lunch and to explore this gem of a town.

Travel to the port of Metohi, where we board a private boat for the ride to Hydra, the car-free Saronic island where donkeys provide the transportation. After lunch at a local taverna, enjoy free to time explore the afternoon before returning to Nafplion.

We return to Athens for a flight to Crete, arriving mid-afternoon in Heraklion, the Cretan capital. After checking in at our hotel, we enjoy an afternoon at leisure and enjoy a walking tour of the Venetian/Ottoman-influenced town prior to dinner.

This morning, we visit one of the greatest museums in all of Greece: Heraklion's Archaeological Museum housing artifacts from 5,500 years of Cretan history. The museum is especially renowned for its Minoan collection, much of which was excavated from the ruins of the palace of Knossos, and which we explore next. After lunch together, visit a Cretan olive oil farm to learn about the history of olive oil production and enjoy a tasting.

Board a private boat for a cruise through the Bay of Elounda to Spinalonga, a former Venetian island fortress later occupied by the Ottomans then used as a leper colony. Then we move on to the village of Krista, where we visit the Byzantine-era Panagia Kera church, known for its frescos and rich iconography.

Depart this morning by high-speed ferry for Santorini, southernmost of the Cycladic islands. Santorini attracts visitors with its stupendous setting of cubiform whitewashed houses sitting atop the jagged cliffs of a crescent-shaped caldera. Upon arrival, we visit a local winery for a tour and tasting and then explore the town of Firostefani.

Today we tour Santorini's archaeological site of Akrotiri, a Bronze Age Minoan location that was abandoned in the 17th century BCE following a volcanic eruption. This afternoon, we head to the town of Oia, known for its iconic whitewashed architecture and stunning views.

Embark on a private cruise around the island and its caldera, the flooded volcanic crater that forms Santorini's half-moon shaped bay. Then we return to Athens via plane, where we enjoy a farewell dinner.

Return home after a thrilling 2 week Greek adventure!
