Inclement Weather Procedures: Please Read

December 2, 2025

The below message was sent to faculty, staff, and students on December 1, 2025.

Dear Staff, Faculty, and Students,

Please review this reminder of our practices as we prepare for possible inclement weather events this winter. When conditions warrant, the College may occasionally modify its operations (e.g., close certain buildings, suspend Blue Bus operations, or adjust other services or activities). Any communication about changes to college operations due to weather will happen as early as possible and will be:

  • Distributed by text and/or e-mail to faculty, staff, and students via the Everbridge emergency alert system for campus-wide changes. If you have not done so already (or if your cell phone number has changed), please register your cell phone number in BIONIC using the instructions posted on Campus Safety's website.
  • Posted to the College's weather alert website (http://alert.brynmawr.edu), which will include specific details about changes to departmental operations such as Libraries, Dining, Transportation, etc., and/or
  • Available via voicemail by calling (610) 526-7310.

In the event of severe weather conditions (such as snow, heavy rain, or windstorms), please be prepared for potential power outages by ensuring that your cell phone and any other essential electronics, like laptops, are fully charged. All students are encouraged to keep a functioning flashlight and extra batteries in their rooms at all times. Hall Advisors are provided with flashlights, and Campus Safety may have a limited supply of flashlights and lantern-style lights available for emergency use. Candles and any other open flames are strictly prohibited in the residence halls and anywhere on campus, as they pose a fire hazard. When walking around campus, please be mindful of staff who may be working to manage snow clearing and salting efforts. Additionally, be cautious of hazardous conditions such as ice on the ground, falling icicles, branches that are breaking off trees, or snow dislodging from roofs.

If circumstances dictate that we want to minimize the number of people on campus for safety and efficiency reasons, faculty and staff should be prepared to teach/work from home if applicable. Keep abreast of local weather forecasts. Faculty and staff should bring any laptops or other equipment home with them as appropriate/possible when the potential exists for bad weather, so that they have the capacity to work from home if campus activity is curtailed. Certain staff members (mainly in Campus Safety, Dining Services, and Facilities) might still be expected to help remove snow or provide other required services on campus. In that case, only staff members notified by their supervisor that they are required to be on campus should report to campus. Professors must notify their students directly whether a class is canceled or will be held in a remote format.

If you have any questions about the above, please don't hesitate to contact the Campus Safety team at x7911.

Sincerely,

Samir Datta
