NIH Grant Awarded to Chemistry's Ashlee Plummer-Medeiros for Bacteria Research
Assistant Professor of Chemistry Ashlee Plummer-Medeiros has received a three-year, $515,000 grant from the National Institute of Health.
The project seeks to uncover how certain bacteria maintain the protective double-membrane barrier that helps them survive antibiotic treatment. By studying the proteins that transport lipids between these membranes, Plummer-Medeiros hopes to identify new vulnerabilities that could serve as targets for future antibiotics, helping address the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance.
Like Plummer-Medeiros’ other NSF-funded research, this funding will allow students she works with opportunities to do both biochemical “wet lab” work and computational biochemistry.
