What's happening at your internship? We would love to hear what kind of work you are doing!

El Sembrador is a Jardin Infantil for vulnerable migrant families. In order to be of emotional support to these children, we must have a better understanding of their emotions. To achieve this, we first need to provide them with the tools necessary to help them express their moods, feelings, and overall thoughts. Therefore, I am designing a workbook-style journal to aid individual children in regulating their emotions. This will also serve as an introduction to daily reflection with interactive techniques, grounding exercises, and positive affirmations. At the same time, my supervisor and I are preparing emotional education training material for teachers to help their students identify, comprehend, and manage their own emotions to then be able to demonstrate empathy for others.

Why did you apply for this internship?

I applied for this internship because after taking Professor Jodie Baird's Lifespan Development psychology course this past semester, I wanted to encourage adults to deeply consider their roles in the lives of children. Parents, teachers, socioeconomic factors, and culture all play a role in shaping human development. Through this internship, I aimed to further learn about the science of developmental psychology and the methods used to approach questions about mind and behavior. Additionally, growing up, I was the child of a vulnerable migrant family, so this is a full-circle moment for me, and I am glad to be experiencing this.
