Assistive Technology: Features and Resources

This is a very small list of the hundreds of apps that are available to support students in a variety of ways. This list is only intended to be a resource and should not necessarily be considered an endorsement.

Reading and Literacy Support

Reading Onscreen

BeeLine Reader

BeeLine Reader promotes supporting reading comprehension through customizable color gradients. The web tool has been found helpful for individuals with vision impairments, dyslexia, attention deficits, and those who experience eye fatigue from extending onscreen reading. BeeLine Reader is now available to all Bryn Mawr College students, staff, and faculty.

Read&Write

  • Read&Write Software is literacy software designed to support reading, writing, and study skills. It is available via free download to users with a Bryn Mawr email address.
  • iReadWrite is a paid mobile app that provides access to Read&Write functionality for smartphones and tablets.

Additional Reading and Literacy Support

  • Canaday Library on Bryn Mawr's campus provides a device called the Genie Pro, which magnifies text on an attached monitor in full color. It is located in the Minerva Lab on Canaday's A floor. Next to the Genie magnifier is a computer that is configured to be accessible for users with low visibility — when any user logs in, the screen is magnified by default, and Read&Write opens ready for use.
  • Natural Reader is text-to-speech software which converts Microsoft Word, webpages, PDFs and email into spoken text and can customize reading voice and speed for your readings.
  • Bookshare is the largest online library of accessible reading materials for people with print disabilities. Accessible books, textbooks, newspapers and magazines are available.
  • Learning Ally educational resources offers the world’s largest collection of human-narrated audio textbooks and literature. Books can be purchased as audio CDs.
  • Ginger grammar checker and translator app checks spelling and grammar and fixes it according to the context of your text in Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, or Chrome.
  • Grammarly grammar checker, spelling checker and vocabulary enhancer is based in the Chrome browser. Grammarly finds the right word with synonym suggestions.

Notetaking Apps

  • Notability is a paid app that enhances notetaking and organization, with Google Drive and Dropbox integration.
  • AudioNote is a paid app that offers note synchronization with audio recording of lectures and provides importing of slideshows.
  • Evernote is a one-stop place to collect notes, files, web clippings, and images with the ability to access them on virtually any device
  • Microsoft OneNote provides notetaking functionality, sharing through OneDrive, and easy searching.
