Art as a Tool for Liberation with Nila Devaney
The workshop will begin by learning about historical and global examples of art as protest, and will lead into collaboratively making a banner/ creating individual signs for a liberation movement of your choice. This is a wonderful space for anyone with curiosity about the intersections between art, social justice and collective community building. No precious experience necessary!
Nila Devaney is a painter, muralist and teacher based in Philadelphia, PA. With a specific interest in the intersection between people and creativity, her work is grounded in youth mentorship, mural-making, and community workshops. Her oil painting practice explores relational patterns through folkloric symbolism and portraiture. She is also 1/2 of Marigold Murals, a West Philly based art collective utilizing art for social change and connectedness. Some influences are: noticing the way people accidentally form tableaus at bus-stops, wind in the trees, bodies of water, and listening to parts of a song as a car drives by your window—all the unexpected symbols.
