Bi-Co Mathematics Colloquium with Dr. Josh Pollitz
Title: "Homological Methods in Commutative Algebra" Abstract: The use of homological methods to study singularities in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry has a storied history. One of the most celebrated theorems of this ilk is one of Auslander, Buchsbaum, and Serre that provides a homological characterization of smooth points on a variety (over the complex numbers). In this talk, I’ll try to explain this theorem and how it is applied to solve a fundamental problem in commutative algebra; time permitting, I’ll discuss some of the ways I have applied homological methods to prove similar theorems.
